Boost Your Running with a Metronome!

If you're looking for a technique to ramp up your running speed, we've got a tip that could make a significant impact. Here are 3 things you should do:

  1. Download a metronome application onto your smartphone.

  1. Set it a starting point.  This can be anywhere from 165 beats per minutes (bpm) up to 225+ bpm…Yes, this is a broad range!!!  However, selecting the right starting point is crucial to ensure consistency and a lower injury risk.

  2. Practice matching the cadence you have set while running. You can run in place or run short intervals.

What is Running Cadence?

Your running cadence is the number of steps you take in a minute.  In other words, how many times does your foot hit the ground?  The lower the cadence, the longer your foot remains on the ground. The longer your foot remains on the ground, the likelihood you will expose your joints to injury or pain.

How Do I Select a Starting Cadence?

Now, there are several things to consider when selecting your starting cadence. First, consider your current level of physical fitness. For beginners or those who are not regular runners, start at the lower end of the cadence spectrum (165-175bpm range) to prevent overexertion. Begin at a comfortable pace and then gradually increase your cadence. The second factor to consider is the type of running you engage in. If you are a sprinter, aiming for a starting cadence above 200bpm is beneficial. However, if you tend to run middle or long distances, aim for about 180bpm. This cadence is conducive to building a steady and sustainable pace that you can maintain over longer periods.
